Targeted protocols and hands-on procedures for precise control of temperature, pH, hardness, and other core water quality parameters based on the physiological requirements of tropical fish, coldwater fish, and marine species.
Different fish species have significantly varied requirements for water temperature, pH, hardness, and salinity. Incorrect water parameters are a common cause of stress, immune suppression, and mortality in ornamental fish. Mastering species-specific water preferences and implementing precision control based on actual conditions is the core technique for successful fish keeping.
Temperature regulation is the top priority in water quality management. Tropical ornamental fish have a suitable temperature range of 24-28 degrees Celsius, optimally 26 degrees. Discus fish require higher temperatures of 28-30 degrees to maintain immunity and digestive function. Tetras prefer 24-26 degrees. Labyrinth fish such as bettas and gouramis can survive in a wide range of 22-30 degrees but need 28-30 degrees during breeding. Goldfish and koi, as coldwater ornamental fish, prefer 18-24 degrees; when summer temperatures exceed 28 degrees, shading or chillers are necessary. Heater wattage selection is based on 1-1.5W per liter, with a thermostat for dual protection. Test temperature twice daily, with fluctuations not exceeding 2 degrees.
pH regulation must be based on species geographic origin. South American Amazon basin fish such as tetras, angelfish, discus, and dwarf cichlids adapt to slightly acidic soft water, with pH 6.0-6.8 being ideal. African Rift Lake cichlids (Malawi, Tanganyika, Victoria) adapt to alkaline hard water; Malawi cichlids prefer pH 7.8-8.5, while Tanganyika cichlids require pH 8.0-9.0. Southeast Asian ornamental fish such as bettas, gouramis, and snakeheads adapt to neutral to slightly acidic water at pH 6.5-7.5. Goldfish and koi prefer neutral to slightly alkaline, pH 7.0-7.8.
Methods to lower pH include: using peat granules or Indian almond leaves to release tannic and humic acids for gradual acidification; laying professional aquasoil (acidifying capacity lasting 6-12 months); adding water softening resin or peat moss to the filter compartment; diluting tap water with RO purified water to reduce carbonate hardness. Methods to raise pH include: adding coral sand or crushed shell to the filter; using sodium bicarbonate solution at 5-10g per 100L water to raise pH by approximately 0.2-0.3 units; adding natural minerals such as maifan stone.
Water hardness includes GH (general hardness) and KH (carbonate hardness). GH is primarily determined by calcium and magnesium ions, affecting fish osmoregulation. South American soft water fish prefer GH 4-8 dH; African cichlids need GH 10-20 dH. KH is the core parameter for pH buffering capacity; when KH is too low, pH fluctuates violently and can cause fish stress death. Maintain KH at 4-8 dH.
Marine ornamental fish require even stricter precision water quality control. Reef tanks require temperature 25-26 degrees (plus or minus 0.5 degrees), salinity 1.024-1.026 (35ppt), pH 8.1-8.4, alkalinity 8-11dKH, calcium 380-450ppm, and magnesium 1250-1350ppm. Saltwater must be mixed using professional sea salt and RO/DI ultrapure water. Calcium reactors and kalkwasser dosing are primary methods for maintaining calcium and alkalinity stability. A protein skimmer is essential for reef tanks, removing dissolved organics through foam fractionation.
When keeping multiple species together, adopt a compromise strategy using the most environmentally sensitive species as the benchmark. Always check adult sizes, territoriality, and aggression before mixing to avoid compatibility conflicts. Maintain detailed water quality logs recording daily temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate data; plotting trend charts helps detect abnormal changes early and take preventive adjustments.
水体硬度包含GH(总硬度)和KH(碳酸盐硬度)两个指标。
