II. Crossbreeding Pattern Selection. Common crossbreeding patterns include two-way crossbreeding, three-way crossbreeding, and rotational crossbreeding. Two-way crossbreeding uses two breeds for crossing, with all F1 hybrids used for fattening; advantages are simplicity and obvious heterosis. Three-way crossbreeding first crosses two breeds to produce maternal lines, then uses a third breed as sire for crossing, combining the advantages of three breeds with higher production performance. Rotational crossbreeding uses three or more breeds as sires in rotation, continuously updating the maternal herd to maintain sustained heterosis. In practice, two-way crossbreeding suits small farms, three-way crossbreeding suits large-scale farming, and rotational crossbreeding suits long-term breeding plans.
III. Crossbreeding Effect Evaluation. Crossbreeding effects are mainly measured by heterosis rate. In growth performance, F1 hybrid daily weight gain is usually 10% to 30% higher than parents. In reproductive performance, hybrid ewes have significantly improved lambing rate and survival rate. In meat performance, hybrid offspring have higher dressing percentage and net meat percentage with better meat quality. When evaluating crossbreeding effects, record indicators such as body weight, body size, reproductive performance, and slaughter performance of hybrid offspring, and compare with parents. Also consider the performance of different crossbreeding combinations under different feeding conditions to select the most suitable crossbreeding scheme for local conditions.
IV. Selection of Hybrid Offspring. Not all hybrid offspring can be used for reproduction; strict selection is required. First, conduct preliminary selection based on body appearance, growth rate, and health status, eliminating individuals with body defects, slow growth, and weak constitution. Second, conduct performance testing on selected individuals, including body weight measurement, reproductive performance recording, and slaughter performance evaluation. Third, establish pedigree records, conduct kinship analysis, and avoid inbreeding. Fourth, evaluate breeding value using methods such as progeny testing to ensure the transmission of excellent genes.
