Homemade cat food has gained increasing popularity among cat owners due to its advantages of fresh ingredients and controllable composition; however, nutritional imbalance is the greatest potential risk of homemade diets. As obligate carnivores, cats have nutritional requirements fundamentally different from omnivores—an extremely high dependence on animal protein, a lack of enzymatic pathways for converting plant precursors into certain essential nutrients such as taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A, and a limited capacity for carbohydrate metabolism. Long-term feeding of homemade cat food lacking scientific nutritional ratios can lead to taurine-deficiency cardiomyopathy, calcium-phosphorus imbalance osteopathy, and multiple trace element deficiency syndromes. Establishing a precise nutritional ratio calculation framework is therefore the prerequisite for safe homemade cat food feeding.
Macronutrient ratios are the starting point for formulation design. Based on AAFCO and NRC standards, the daily diet for adult maintenance cats should meet the following macronutrient ratios on a dry matter basis: crude protein no less than 26% (recommended 30%-45%), crude fat no less than 9% (recommended 15%-25%), carbohydrates no more than 25% (recommended below 10%), crude ash no more than 10%, and moisture 65%-75%. The selection and combination of ingredient materials determine formulation quality. Recommended muscle meats include chicken breast, turkey, duck breast, rabbit, and lean beef, with protein contents of 20%-23% (wet weight) and fat contents of 1%-10%. Heart meats such as chicken and duck hearts are rich in taurine and are recommended to constitute 10%-15% of total meat weight. The feline taurine requirement is 35-50 mg per kg body weight per day. A feline-specific comprehensive nutritional supplement powder is recommended, added according to the product's labeled dosage.
