Rex rabbits are a breed primarily producing premium fur. Unlike meat rabbit farming, Rex rabbit farming''s core goal is fur quality rather than meat yield, resulting in significantly different technical priorities in management.

Fur maturity assessment is the core technique for determining slaughter timing. Rex rabbits complete their first molt at 4-6 months of age, when fur quality peaks. Assessment criterion: blow apart the fur and observe skin color; transition from pink to creamy white indicates maturity.

Optimal slaughter at 5-6 months, 2.5-3 kg body weight. Too early yields sparse, fluffy, poor-quality fur; too late yields coarse, dull fur with reduced luster. Slaughter season November through February produces the densest winter pelts.

Nutritional factors affecting fur quality: sulfur amino acids (methionine and cystine) are main fur fiber components; dietary methionine + cystine should reach 0.7-0.75%. Trace elements zinc and copper are critical for fur color and luster. Adding vitamin H (biotin) improves pelt quality and reduces hair loss.

Management essentials: individual cage housing to prevent fur damage from mutual biting. Keep cages dry and clean to prevent fur soiling. Regularly groom to remove loose fur and mats. Stop all medications that may leave residues affecting pelt quality 14 days before slaughter.
