The kit stage has the highest mortality rate in rabbit production. Care quality from birth to weaning directly determines the quantity and uniformity of market rabbits. Scientific care can increase kit survival from 70% to over 95%.

Days 1-7: sleep-nursing period. Kits are born hairless, eyes closed, with poor thermoregulation. Maintaining 30-32 degrees Celsius in nest boxes is critical. Ensure every kit receives colostrum; its rich immunoglobulins are the only source of passive immunity. Check daily that kit bellies are full and rounded.

Days 8-14: kits begin growing fur and opening eyes. Keep bedding dry and clean; watch for eye problems. Around day 14, kits try leaving the nest; nest box temperature can be lowered to 25-28 degrees. Doe milk production peaks at this stage.

Fostering effectively adjusts litter size. Perform within 3 days of birth, selecting does with no more than 2 days'' difference in kindling dates. Before fostering, rub foster kits with the foster mother''s urine to eliminate foreign odors. Optimal nursing load is 6-8 kits per doe.

Days 18-21: begin creep feeding with specialized kit pellets, 2-2.5 mm diameter, crude protein no less than 18%. Place feeders where kits can easily access. Keep kits with the doe during creep feeding until weaning at 35-42 days. Keep weaned kits in original cages for 7-10 days to reduce stress.
